
Sergi Roca Bru is an internationally active conductor based in Kiel, Germany, where he serves as Second Kapellmeister.
He has conducted numerous orchestras in both symphonic and operatic repertoire, including over 20 operas, operettas and musicals.
Roca Bru was born in 1987 in Sabadell, near Barcelona. He began playing violin and piano at the age of five. He studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold with Prof. Karlheinz Bloemeck and finished his bachelor’s and master's degrees at the prestigious Institute for Conducting at the Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT Weimar with Markus L. Frank and Prof. Nicolás Pasquet. He has also participated in masterclasses with Karel Mark Chichon, György Ráth, Vittorio Parisi and Gianluigi Gelmetti and received additional training from Kurt Masur, Martin Hoff, Gunter Kahlert and Ivan Törzs.
In 2011, while still a student, he founded the Igor Ensemble which focused on impressionism and early 20th-century music, and was later appointed Music Director of the Collegium Musicum Weimar from 2013-2015. His degree production of Donizetti's L’elisir d’amore at the Studiotheater Belvedere Weimar was awarded the DAAD-Prize for Outstanding Achievements.
In 2014 during his master’s degree, Sergi Roca Bru was appointed Second Kapellmeister and Head of Music at Theater Nordhausen. There he gained experience conducting a variety of repertoire including: Nabucco, La bohème, Die Fledermaus, Der Zarewitsch, Les Brigands, Luisa Fernanda, My Fair Lady, Dracula as well as the ballets The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Giselle, and Romeo and Juliet, among others.
At the festival „Thüringer Schlossfestspielen“ in Sondershausen he was the musical director of Fiddler on the Roof and La serva padrona.
After a performance of Il barbiere di Siviglia, Roca Bru won the position of Second Kapellmeister at Theater Kiel. Since his appointment in 2019, he has conducted Lucia di Lammermoor, Madama Butterfly, Die tote Stadt, Il viaggio a Reims, Die Fledermaus, and La finta giardiniera as well as the world premiere of Il libro della giungla, by Giovanni Sollima; the second production ever of Jim Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivführer by Kats-Chernin, and the Broadway musical Sunset Boulevard. Upcoming performances in Kiel include Verdi's masterpieces Aida and Otello.
In addition, Sergi Roca Bru has led concerts with orchestras like Jenaer Philharmonie, Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès and the Youth Orchestra of Thuringia.
In 2021 he made his Spanish debut with a production of Tosca at Fundació Òpera a Catalunya, touring nine Catalan cities after the premiere in Sabadell. With this Tosca he also debuted at the Palau de la Música Catalana (Barcelona).
