Sergi Roca Bru is internationally active as a guest conductor and serves as 1st resident conductor (Kapellmeister) and substitute general music director at the Schleswig-Holsteinisches Landestheater in Flensburg. His “fine musical instinct” and his “honest, uncompromising interpretations” characterize an energetic yet subtle style at the podium. With over 25 operas and operettas and by conducting numerous orchestras, he has acquired a broad repertoire in symphonic music as well as opera and ballet.

The tasks ahead of him at Schleswig-Holsteinisches Landestheater in the season 2023/24 include conducting Peter Grimes and La Traviata, the musical direction of the productions The Firebird, Der arme Jonathan, and Sweeney Todd as well as several concerts. His debut in Estonia is scheduled for July , where he will conduct Tosca at the opening night of the Saaremaa Opera Festival.


In 2021, he caused a stir with the production of Tosca with Fundació Òpera a Catalunya. The premiere in Sabadell was followed by a tour of nine Catalan cities, culminating in a performance at the famous Palau de la Música Catalana concert hall in Barcelona. In 2023, another invitation followed as musical director for Madama Butterfly. After 14 sold-out performances, the successful show set a new attendance record for this 40-year-old opera company.

After conducting Il barbiere di Siviglia, Sergi Roca was hired as 2nd Kapellmeister at the Opera Kiel, where he served during the seasons 2019-2023. In pandemic and post-pandemic times, he took over the musical direction of Lucia di Lammermoor, The Jungle Book, Jim Knopf und Lukas der Lokomotivführer, Sunset Boulevard, and La vie parisienne, and conducted many other titles such as Die tote Stadt, Madama Butterfly, Manon Lescaut, Otello, Aida, Iolanta, Die Zauberflöte, La finta giardiniera, Il viaggio a Reims, and Die Fledermaus. With the Kiel Ballet Ensemble he performed Sacre du Printemps, The Firebird, and The Nutcracker.

Among others, Roca Bru has performed with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria, the Orquesta Simfònica del Vallès, the Jena Philharmonic, the Kiel Philharmonic, and the Lübeck Philharmonic. Through his collaboration with youth orchestras such as the LJO Schleswig-Holstein, the LJO-Thüringen, and the Kiel Theater Academy, he has helped to promote young musical talent. Also as the founder of the Igor Ensemble and as director of the Collegium Musicum Weimar during his studies. ​

 

In 2014, his first engagement took place at the Nordhausen Theater as 2nd Kapellmeister and Head of Music (2014-2018). There he conducted numerous lyric productions, including Nabucco, La Bohème, Die Fledermaus, Der Tsarevitsch, Luisa Fernanda, Les Brigands, My Fair Lady, and Dracula, and ballets such as Romeo and Julia, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, The Four Seasons, and Giselle. At the Thüringer Schlossfestspiele Sondershausen, he took over the musical direction for Fiddler on the Roof and La serva padrona.

 

Roca Bru was born in 1987 in Sabadell, near Barcelona. As a child, he learned to play the violin and the  piano. He studied orchestral conducting at the Detmold University of Music with Prof. Bloemecke and at the renowned Institute for Conducting at the FRANZ LISZT University of Music in Weimar with M. L. Frank and Prof. Pasquet. Master classes with Karel Mark Chichon, Vittorio Parisi, and Gianlucca Gelmetti completed his musical education. Furthermore, he received advices from Kurt Masur, Martin Hoff, Gunter Kahlert and Ivan Törzs. ​

Sergi Roca Bru was awarded the DAAD Prize for outstanding achievements in 2014 for the production “L'Elisir d'amore”. In 2023, he received the second prize and a special prize at the 11th International Opera Conducting Competition "Luigi Mancinelli" in Orvieto.
